Update: What's New on GuildSomm.com - July, 2012
July 05, 2012
We hope your Independence Day was full of red, white and sparkling! As many of us across the country try to beat the heat, we also hope your wine fridges and cellars are staying cool! Perhaps someone should start a discussion thread for favorite at-home wine fridges... Until then, here's what we've been talking about on GuildSomm:
New features:
"I've coached an untold number of students taking the tasting exams [...] over the years. Here's a summary of advice..." Master Tim Gaiser outlines why the grid is your mantra and what, exactly, to do every step of the way.
"The relationship between Riesling and the patchwork maze of soils beneath it is suddenly layered with meaning: can the soil supersede the climate?" Master Matt Stamp goes "Acid-Tripping in the Pfalz" and digs up loads of geek-fodder about bedrock, pH levels, cultured v. ambient yeasts and the everlasting question: dry or sweet?
NEW Staff Training Modules - The latest module posted as part of our new project is Alsace! These downloadable and printable documents are freely available for Guild members to use, with the aim of providing high-quality content that wine directors and restaurant managers can use for staff training. In addition to Alsace, we've posted modules for Champagne and the Rhône Valley. Your feedback is welcomed!
"Instead of a competition, it has become a community. There's a movement in Atlanta right now, and we're proud to be a part of it..." Atlantan Eric Crane introduces the up-and-coming wine scene in his hometown, while we ask five local sommeliers for their inside perspectives. We also want to know: Should your city be next?? Let us know what city you want to see in the Sommelier Spotlight!
Enrichment and Scholarship opportunities:
Upcoming Tastings! - We're coming to your city with tastings and Master Classes on Germany, Alto Adige and Chile this summer. Plus, stay closely tuned to our GuildSomm events page... we'll be posting upcoming Chablis and Australia Master Classes in the next few days! Make sure to register early, as events sell out quickly.
Scholarship for Advanced Exam - Applications are now being accepted for the August 2012 Advanced Sommelier Exam Scholarship. Note that this application covers ONLY the August 2012 exam in Washington, DC.
New discussion topics:
Are you on Twitter? Make sure to follow @GuildSomm for news and the GuildSomm Question of the Day! We're now posting our #gsqod on the Guild homepage, and our archive of questions can be found in the forums above the Review Questions on the Study Guide page.
Translation Widget - We're just beginning to work on translating our site into a number of other languages. While this project is still in its infancy, we're excited and value your feedback! Stay tuned as this project develops. Podcasts - Stay tuned for a new podcast next week, in which Masters Geoff Kruth and Matt Stamp discuss studying wine theory.
Finally, please join us in wishing GOOD LUCK to our Master candidates who are sitting for the exam in Dallas next week!
As always, a huge THANK YOU to all our members for contributing to our community and supporting each other through our professional network. See you online soon!
