New on GuildSomm: Germany Updates, Amaro, the Truth About Spätburgunder

August 06, 2013

Dog days of summer? Not for us: We've been keeping busy and staying cool over on, focusing on tons of blind tasting groups around the country, new feature content and Compendium updates, and lining up great new scholarships for you.

Also, if you're not a regular participant on our discussion forums, you're missing out! These are often lively debates and educational discussions—not to mention offer insider insight on what's new and popular in our industry. Our latest video tutorial covers taking advantage of our discussion forums to their fullest.

Check out the latest online, and have a great rest of your summer...

New features:

New podcast: four somms pitch their favorite wines - Desi Echavarrie MS, Ryan Stetins, Steve Distler and Kelli White each tell us about a wine they're currently excited about and answer a host of questions about their selection and the region it comes from.

"Even in 2002 our dear friend Mr. Robert Parker was out of date concerning German Pinot Noir." Our German correspondent Romana Echensperger calls out Parker and tells us the truth about Spätburgunder, including a discussion of clones, winemaking techniques and specificities in various terroirs.

"One of the many questions to ask when contemplating this move is: "Will I be okay leaving the floor?"" Master Sommelier Eric Entrikin offers thoughts and sage advice on transferring from running a single restaurant list to multi-unit operations, including how to manage staff education at multiple locations.

Germany Compendium Updates and Staff Training Guide - Our latest staff training guide features Germany and is free to all members to download and use with your staff! In addition, we've updated the Germany Compendium with the most up-to-date Ochsle levels in handy new charts.

New discussions:

Favorite Amaro - Do you drink too much Amaro? You're not alone. Share your confessions about what's in your glass most often and check out what others think you're missing out on.

Working Harvest 2013 - Are you working all or part of harvest this year? Your fellow members would love to hear about what you're doing and be able to ask questions and learn as you go. Share your experience

Enrichment and scholarships:

London "The Beautiful South" Trip - Wines of South Africa, Wines of Chile and Wines of Argentina are co-hosting a two-day trade tasting in London, featuring over 300 producers and over 3000 wines. This trip is sponsored by Wines of South Africa. Applications are due by noon PST August 9.

Australia Masterclasses - Master Matt Stamp's series on Australia begins next week in Chicago and New York! He'll also be bringing the show to Miami, Seattle and San Diego this year. The more you think you dislike Australia, the more you need to go to this class. Check out the wines we're pouring, too.

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming class, blind tasting group or TEXSOM! By the way, you can follow what we're learning there by following us on Twitter and checking out the hashtag #TSLA (TEXSOM Learning Announcement). Thanks, as ever, for contributing your thoughts and enthusiasm to our wine professional community. Cheers!
