We are planning a trip to one or both of these regions in February. Does anyone have winery visit recommendations for us? Thanks!
In Livermore Valley, I suggest Wente and Concannon which make good wines and have great historical significance. Purely base on wine quality, I also recommend Steven Kent, Vasco Urbano, Occasio, Darcy Kent and McGrail. You can do well there in one or two rigorous days.Santa Cruz Mountains is a huge area and it takes a long time to get from one part to another. How long do you have?
We should fly into SFO and arrive early, so could spend one day in Livermore and then would go over to Santa Cruz and would have 1.5 to 2 days there. We ultimately will need to end up in Palo Alto for hubby's business trip.
Rhys, Ridge and Thomas Fogarty in Santa Cruz Mountains
Big Basin in Santa Cruz Mountains
Should you find yourself in Santa Cruz proper, check out Storrs Winery. They have a tasting room near downtown. There's also a cool wine bar/shop called Soif in the heart of downtown.
Definite yes on Ridge, Fogarty and Big Basin. Also worth seeking out are Ser, Sante Arangeli, Bonny Doon, and Beauregard. Also try Waxwing. They're in an industrial park in Belmont. The wines are very good.
Just tried Rhys for the first time yesterday as they are new to my market. Wow! Not only are the wines amazing, the owner did painstaking research on soil types and weather patterns to find ideal spots. I do know this, they'll be on my wine list soon, and my list of places to visit the next time I'm out there.
Their Pinot Noirs get all the credit but I think Rhys is making some of the best Chardonnay in the USA right now. Wines are AMAZING.
Ridge for sure, fill out their form for requesting trade visits and they'll probably give you a tour/taste you on vintage Monte Bello!
I agree entirely. The Pinot was delicious, but I was particularly enamored with the Chard.
I tried to get a visit scheduled, but you have to be on their mailing list in order to be able to visit. I signed up and it said that there is a 1-2 year wait list to get on the list! So, if you want to visit, better sign up now.
We visited and had a great time. Their tasting room in Saratoga was hopping on a Saturday night.
Made it to Storr's....thanks for the recommendation!
