We just finished recording our 2018 year in review podcast. Each year we ask our guests for any predictions for 2019.
What are your predictions for the wine world in 2019? Trends, styles, hot topics?
No predictions, but can’t wait to hear the podcast, the end of years are always fantastic!!
Rajat Parr’s wines will be on a lot more wine lists
I'll sell a lot of Cabernet.
Predictions? Let me just put on my robe and wizard hat...
1. Cognac is gonna come back like it never went out of style. Same with Vodka.
2. You'll see more and more marketing for wine rather than spirits on tv and the internet.
3. $14-$20 glasses of wine will be more and more common in restaurants & bars outside of big cities due to demand.
4. Conversely, retailers will see a BOOM in the >$15 segment in their stores. $30-$48 will take a hit.
5. There will be a celebrity endorsement for "Natural Wine" and it will go very poorly. Memes will be made.
I can already see gwyneth paltrows face in those natural wine memes...
Interest rates will continue raising and with that all of our affluent customers will be drinking less and less expansive wines.
Two Words: Oregon Chardonnay.
Also, I agree with the wine advertising point and the BTG price point. Pun intended.
Many unsold natural wines that have been on the shelves for a couple of years will finally explode as they’ve been slowly fermenting away in the bottle.
2019 Hot Topic: The death of the geeky, "I don't know any of these wines on this list", wine list. Can the somm community come together and start putting their guests and consumers first, instead of their personal wants? & if they do choose to have wine lists this obscure, will they start training their staffs well enough to back it up? - I know I don't speak of everyone, but it is still happening too much and has to reach a tipping point soon. Maybe 2019 is the year!
I don't foresee the labor crisis or natural disasters going away in 2019. I envision a lot of new AVAs, particularly West Sonoma Coast, getting approval.
Yah already in the works:
I think 2019 will be the year of Peak Instagram Influencer in the beverage world. Wines from Greece will get some serious critical acclaim (already starting, but will accelerate). A major American wine region will have a vintage essentially ruined by some sort of natural disaster (sadly low-hanging fruit at this point). We will read 1000 articles about how legal cannabis will ruin the beverage industry, and none of it will come true.
I truly hope you're right, but I'm not counting on it at all.
Bobby Stuckey will tell some young somms "you and your natural wine get off my lawn."
Northern Rhone Syrah prices are going to continue to increase
