For the past few years, I've had the idea of getting some 1990's to open up on my 30th birthday. Lot of age for some wines and regions, but 1990 was also a spectacular vintage for many regions world wide- the grapes must have known I was coming ;)
Does anyone have experience with this year from any region? Any place or producers I should start hunting down?
Any tips are helpful,
Also a product of the 1990 here. While I would definitely highlight nebbiolo from Piemonte and even Lombardia as well as riesling from most regions and duh of course burgundy...and northern rhone...oh man we're getting carried away here. Working closely with domestic wines for the past year and beyond I would definitely suggest giving California a shot. The prices can be somewhat reasonable and it was truly an elegant vintage that produced many wines to age. Some particular highlights: Corison, Dunn, Spottswoode, Diamond Creek 'RRT' and Dominus. There's some fun stuff to be had on Winebid if you're willing to take a gamble.
Some of my favorite 90's I've been fortunate enough to taste: Lynch Bages, Mascarello 'Monprivato', Giacosa 'Monfortino', Y'Quem, Latour, ArPePe 'Sassella - Rocce Rosse', Clos des Goisses.
