I’m preparing for my WSET-D4 Sparkling exam and I need to taste a New World Non Traditional Method Sparkling wine of good quality. Any recommendations of a wine that fits this description and is easily accessible (major liquor/wines shops)? Sparkling Rosé is ok too.
Just a heads-up, Australian Shiraz is a different category.
Brick and Mortar Vin Petillant. Out of Napa and dynamite. Alexis Iaconis is your resource for sourcing.
And Patton Valley 2019 Pétillant Naturel. Not sure about distribution, guessing it is small for both producers, but at least you have two examples that fit the category stateside. I've had both I suggested and they are high quality. firstname.lastname@example.org is the contact for PV. Hope this helps.
All pet nats: Stolpman Trousseau, Birichino Malvasia, Adroit rosé (some RS though) are all great, but might be hard to find depending on the market. I know Field Recordings makes a Cab Franc rosé pet nat too, and I've seen it at all the Whole Foods I've been to recently.
Day Wines Mamacita Pet Nat from Oregon is great if you can find it!
I’m such an idiot... I didn’t even consider Pet Nat as a testable option for WSET... I have a bunch of Cruse Sparkling St Laurent and Valdiguie in my fridge.
Looks like Ancestral method is strong in these parts.
Check out any canned bubbles you can get your hands on for forced carb and charmat options.
COR cellars from Columbia Gorge also does a forced carb sparkling that’s worth studying.
Christine, WSET uses wines available in all major markets in order to be fair to all candidates. The non-TM wines that I can think of for MW (Barefoot Bubbly, Australian Pink Moscato) would be unlikely, I think, for WSET Diploma. My advice would be to concentrate on the classics.
Christine, I agree with Kim here. Pet-nat is certainly becoming more popular, so it's a good category to know, but for the WSET Diploma, New World non-traditional method of good quality includes things like Korbel, Barefoot Bubbly, etc. Based on wines used from previous exams, it seems very unlikely that they would include one of these.
