I’m writing a holiday wine gift guide and want to know what would make a cool gift for a somm. Let’s reduce the number of Rabbit corkscrews and mediocre wines under the tree. If a friend or family member buys you a wine gift this holiday, what would you be excited to receive as a modest gift as well as extreme?
Depending on how much you like that Somm...
Terry Thiese's "Reading between the wines"; Wine Grapes by Jancis Robinson et al; Code 38 Wine opener. All the best at what they do.
Oh, i almost forgot, let's not forget about a GuildSomm subscription!!!
And a SOMM soundtrack.
I would love to find the new Jancis Robinson book under my Christmas Tree.
Durand Corkscrew for difficult corks.
I second the GuildSomm subscription and would add Zalto glasses. And a poron.
Awesome gift ideas! I'll include them in the post. Stevie - is the poron a shoe cushioning? Any link to products?
Opaque tasting glasses. Most eye-opening blind tasting I've ever experienced. Thank you Larry O'Brien. I need to do that more often.
Subscription and back issues from Tong.
I'm guessing that Stevie meant "porron" - it's a Spanish wine pitcher that is great for geeky somm parties where you want to haze newbies.
I also think that port tongs or an ah-so would be cool gifts for somms. Also, any Champagne or classic spirit would be happily received. :)
Ah! A porron, yes!
Hahaha porron for sure. Not shoe cushions. Ha! On a separate note, here are some recs for books from Eric Asimov (his book not among them!). I'm also wondering if anyone has gotten Liem's Sherry book or Max Allen's History of Australian Wine. Any thoughts on them?
