I just wanted to make sure everyone saw this opportunity. For those who don't know, the Chaine is an old, international food and dinning society that puts a considerable emphasis on wine for their events.
Every year they sponsor a national competition for sommeliers under the age of 30. This is a national competition, with an initial online qualifier, followed by in-person regional qualifiers, followed by nationals. I think there are 8 or 9 different regions they slice the country into, so there's lots of opportunities to place.
I did this competition for five years between the time I was 25 and 30, and it gave me a huge opportunity to get to know my community both in New York, but also nationally. It really helped me to practice for exams, as well as to set standards of knowledge and service quality to aspire to.
Travel expenses to the national competition, and possibly some parts of regional competitions are paid for. The regional competitions are proctored by professional members of the Chaine, plus usually at least one MS or MW.
For me, this is a no-brainier for any young sommelier, and something everyone in the age bracket should say yes to. I had no idea I would even place my first year.
