Napa Valley Wine Academy WSET

Hi, I am curious if anyone on here as done any of the WSET courses through the Napa Valley Wine Academy?  Thinking of pursuing level 3, and they offer some interesting options.  Specifically, I would love to know if anyone has done their boot camp for level 3?  It is a one week immersion that includes lots of "field trips" in Napa, but it costs significantly more.  So, if you have been able to visit wineries and see harvest maybe it's not worth the extra money?  Thoughts on any of this would be appreciated!

  • I just did level two with them and I really enjoyed it. I did the 2 day course in Santa Barbara but studied very intensely for about 6 weeks before. Though I was far more prepared than most of the students, it was very helpful because their in person portions are blazing fast and only scratch the surface. One thing I like about that particular school is they have a great resource of online material, supplemental info etc [I think WSET just nominated them for educator of the year].

I'm looking into Level 3 right now and the intensive experience looks incredible. The dates don't work well for me but if they did I'd likely do it.  I'd think it'd be infinitely beneficial to your learning to get hands on like that and it'd also be tons of fun. I'm leaning towards online and then will do a bunch of mini field trips in the LA area like SB, Paso, Napa etc and make my own version of it.

One thing that KILLs me about WSET is that it takes 2 months to get your results back.

  • Hi Sarah, I am currently taking the WSET Level 3 online and am trying to the the better half into letting me do the Harvest Boot Camp as well. It looks like a ton of fun, but the price tag...that is the only hinderance right now. Hoping someone has some experience with it as I would love to do it! Salute!

Thanks so much Evan for your reply! I will let you know if I do this intensive and how it is!
  • In reply to Steve Martinelli:

Hi Steve, thanks for being in touch! I will definitely let you know if I do it and how it goes!
  • I did the 8 week session with them for Level 3. Overall, it was fine. Some good teachers, some ok.
  • I finished the Level 3 course online in November but will take my exam in March. From what I learned through the course the Boot Camp might help some but the information presented really is much more than Cali wines or the methods used in the vineyards there. Hands on experience is great, no doubt, but I think you will do fine just taking the course itself. I enjoyed the online class because it allows you more time to actually learn what makes great wine both in the vineyard and the winery and how climate affects the entire process. Learning all of that material in 5 days then taking the exam, especially the written part seems like a tougher task than 9 weeks of online studying. Good luck either way! I'm anxious to get to my exam and hopefully pass.
