When Francis Percival wrote recently about the rise of the “American ‘Somm’” in the new online drinking-culture online magazine Punch, likening American sommelier communities (largely online) to college fraternities, it sparked plenty of discussion and undoubtedly ruffled a few feathers. And although there may be a grain of truth in there somewhere, his characterization is probably more representative of limited research.
