To my knowledge, La Rioja was not long (if ever) under Moorish rule. Unless if by region you mean Spain as a whole. La Reconquista was a centuries long process that culminated in the 1492 surrender of Granada, the last muslim kingdom in the Iberian peninsula.

Bryce, this was a treat to read. You helped make sense of the differences between village appellations in places like France and Italy and the lack of these discrete appellations in Spain.

Although Arizona has nowhere near the history of Rioja and Ribeira del Duero, the wine industry is finally gaining momentum, Graciano has become hugely popular. It's high acid is balanced by wide diurnal shifts - ranging from 21°F to 105°F.
