Wonderful and illuminating essay. Question though. In the text above it states the following: 'The vines in the Côte Blonde are planted in soils with a greater limestone content, offering softer, more delicate Syrah, often with a contribution of Viognier. Just south, Côte Brune’s Syrahs are darker, more muscular, and grounded in iron-rich schist—qualities amplified in La Landonne, which is found on the Brune side.' Is the 'just south' reference with regard to the Côte Brune a typo? Doesn't the Côte Brune lie to the north of the Côte Blonde?

What a great article! I've had the pleasure of enjoying a bottle of the 1989 Guigal La Landonne a couple years ago and it is one of my epiphany wines. I have always been a fan of Syrah but had never had the opportunity or the means to try one of such caliber and with that much age/development. I look forward to visiting the site one day to bring the experience full circle. Thank you Bryce for the great read!

I truly enjoyed this article considering I have never tried any of the famous " La Las" . I looked them up and they go for 200 dollars plus a bottle depending on which vintage. Thank you for all the detailed description on the tasting notes

Sorry, hit return by mistake. To finish, I found the way that they work the steep vineyards with those "pulley systems" very interesting. A lot of the vineyards are not terraced and run vertically up and down a 50 degree slope. I attempted to schedule a rendez-vous with Guigal, but being August, all of Chateau Ampuis was away on vacation!

Bryce, really enjoyed your article. When were you there?Last summer I spent a day with Rene Rostaing and Stephane Ogier. Rene is really old school and doesn't like oak at all! His "torpedo tube" roto-fermenters were facinating as I had never seen that style of wine making equipment before. Stephane Ogier (who has take over the business from his father) took me up into the vinyards where I was able to see first hand the true steepness of the Cote Rotie
