Continued insight into Friuli's Sauvignon Blanc (thanks to Jeremy Parzen):

Hopefully this scandal draws sharper eyes to the necessary hard work required by the vineyard -whose shortcomings can't be tailored in the cellar.

I hope that those honest, hard-working craftsmen and women working with Sauvignon Blanc in Friuli don't suffer. They make delicious, unique wines worthy of attention.

A follow-up about the Ponca soils so famous and talked-about in Friuli:

I got another opportunity to speak with Giampaolo Venica this week, and he elaborated a bit on the subject. To sum up, understanding of the "ponca" soils is very early in the research phase. The term is widely used and historically significant, but there has been little geological research, time, or money dedicated to understanding the exact identity, quality, and impact of ponca.

Geologists like Yves Herody are not cheap, and if a producer does dedicate money and time to research their soils, they may be apprehensive to share that information. Furthermore, the Collio Consorzio does not find such research a priority for their limited funding.

On our end, I think we as sommeliers too often look for a simple correlation between soils and wines. This works when conversing for a few seconds with guests about a wine's sense-of-place, but without doubt is often an oversimplification.

Even places with well-researched and defined soils (like Burgundy) have great variation between vineyard and plot.

No doubt Friuli's ponca will find greater definition in the future, but for now, it is an over-stretched label.
