Hi Jeffrey, it's a bit confusing, but the Charta organization was folded into VDP.Rheingau in 1999. To my understanding, they still released their Charta wines (with the symbol of the arches, etc.) while maintaining the Erste Gewachs terminology as their top "grand cru" wine. In 2021, it was decided that with the 2018 vintage Erste Gewachs would be changed to Rheingau Grosses Gewachs to bring them into alignment with other regions. It seems like every two years there are changes to either German Wine Law or the VDP, so it's hard to keep up, but this is my current understanding.

Question? Is Charta organization now gone in the Rheingau? (I was in the understand that Erste Gewächs was grand cru Troken in Rheingau?). And is terms like Grosse Lage, and Erste Lage still hold meaning for off dry?
