Not only do farmers have to contend with the vagaries of the increasingly vagarious seasons, they also have to face an evolving roster of pestilences.
Arguably, vineyard managers have it easier than conventio

RE: Major Maladies of the Vine

The two white grapes in the chart above have the exact same Vinifera composition listed (62.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Carignan, 12.5% Chardonnay). The recent trend towards never-before-heard-of varietals bodes well for the new varieties created to combat Pierce's disease.

RE: Major Maladies of the Vine

Adding to the conversation, SLH's Pisoni Vineyard has recently pulled vines from a troublesome plot in favor or planting a new "insectary". The issue that they're trying to combat is the Mealy Bug and viral diseases that other pests can bring. The insectary is home to various plants that are indigenous to California and in particular Monterey County. The end goal is to forge a residence for insects that do not disturb vine growth and prey on those that have a more mischievous intentions, all while creating a more homogeneous vineyard. This idea seems much inline with Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon's philosopy and I'm sure many others. Is anyone familiar with other producers or regions that are planting these Insectary's?

This was planted very recently. Tthe idea is the plot of land, within the sidewalk, will be rich with indigenous California shrubs, flowers and plants. I'll be the first to admit, I never thought I'd geek out over bugs and shrubs. Cool stuff!

RE: Major Maladies of the Vine

Here is a good follow up article on Esca grapevine trunk disease (GTD) and the role of the Guyot-Poussard pruning system in combating it. http://mowse.blogspot.com/2017/10/esca-grapevine-trunk-disease-gtd-and.html

RE: Major Maladies of the Vine

Great article Kelli!
