First rate. You usefully provide the context in which bio-d was reactionary (in a good way) in its inception. Then, how the original bio-d application region was so very unlike most of the places where it is now applied. Most importantly, how it can be an advisory to many in a number of ways to a positive way forward in farming, Demeter or not. Thanks!

I have been struggling emotionally with having bought some chemical sprays to protect my vines this summer. (last year I lost all my fruit to Black Rot) This article is inspiring. Now that I will be leaving City Winery to return full time to my farm... perhaps I can be more PRESENT. Let's give it one more year organically, and use this summer to prepare for BD500 and BD501. Who knows, if I get a deer with my bow I can even source for BD502 ;)

Excellent writing, as usual - we´re spoiled! But you, like an author of a multi-book drama, dropped a huge cliff-hanger with barely an explanation! The line: "Meanwhile, the own-rooted vines are officially off hospice and have recovered their place as the centerpiece of Bethel Heights' single-vineyard program."

Great read! So thorough. Hopefully as this becomes more normative in the vineyard it will become more acknowledged within general agricultural practices as well. I strongly believe that how we treat our soil & microbial systems for the next 50-100 years will make or break the planet.

Fun fact: Fritz Haber also created chlorine gas, the first chemical weapon. It's one of the sad ironies of history that the man who helped the modern population boom is also directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.
