We rechecked our sources, and there are competing estimates but agreement that it's over 50%, with the key point being that the yield for French oak is so much lower. The article has been updated, and a revised illustration is coming soon.

Great article, thanks for the great info! Do they use 50 or 80% of the American Oak tree for the barrels? The article states 80%, then the illustration below shows 50%
