I recently moved to Chicago and joined the team at Everest Restaurant. We are an Alsatian focused French restaurant. Chef Joho being from Barr, is very proud of his homeland. Our wine list is a playground of interesting producers, Grand Crus, and vintages. I haven't had the pleasure of traveling there yet, but have fallen head over heels for this region. I could only hope the love affair catches the attention of our Sommelier community and push to see more information written and more wines imported. Thank you so much for this wonderful article. Cheers!

Concerning availability of those wines, we have the same problem here in Germany, too. Here everybody thinks: "well here is growing Pinot Gris and Riesling too - so why should we import?" We only can encourage the importers to broaden their assortments! I hope it will work, because I really love those wines... :-))

I think one of the issues with reviving Alsace is that there is not a single boutique importer specializing in promoting the small producers of the area. You often see wines from the three or four large producers that are nationally imported. While many of these wines are very good, I think a real revival would require an importer with a bull-horn bringing attention to a small portfolio of the best small wineries.

I miss alsace already, I can even see the hotel i stayed at in Riquewihr.

Maybe some fact checking will prove me wrong, but one problem I heard from wine makers in Alsace is that the only way a vineyard can be Grand Cru is if it supplies to multiple wineries. One winery I visited owned three vineyards, and produced for their winery only. Great wine with no chance of moving up! (insert fact check)

None the less, great article!
