Looking back, I wish I had brought it on our list, but even as I was working at a steakhouse in Contra Costa County, I thought it would be a tough sale to make as most of our guests who wanted a "local" wine meant Napa. I was pretty intrigued by the wine, though.

I think I saw a promo video on youtube once. Here is a link to a post from my now-defunct blog about meeting Randall Grahm:

When I was at Davis our Wine Technology and Winery Systems class took a field trip to visit and I’ll never forget the massive bottling line at Woodbridge and the thousands of bottles of Vermentino running down the line. This article really shakes up the misconception that that is all Lodi has to offer. Admittedly, I had not even heard of Flame Tokay, and clearly Lodi's history and potential makes it not one to be so overlooked anymore. Looks like I need to make another field trip. Thanks for sharing!

He produces great "old vine" Zinfandel and Chardonnay grown in their vineyard within the Mokelumne River AVA. He has Zin planted in the 1930's who's trunks look like all trees; a must see! He also plants Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and several of the Douro red varietals, but old vine Zin is his thing. Craig introduced me to the folks from Macchia, which at that time were more known for their fortified wines than their dry styles. I found the folks from Lodi to be very helpful and cooperative when approached for information about their AVA and their wines. I recommend everyone that wants to witness real "old vine" Zin to take a trip to Lodi.
