Very similar concept to what I've been doing in Google Earth Pro (GEP) the past few years. Some of which I've uploaded in the past. These look way more polished than mine :) But I'm also able to manipulate the world so it's just a different way to do things.

These kinds of maps absolutely address the biggest issue I've have had for decades with wine maps. They look amateurish. I've even commented that some look like a 4 year old drew them in crayon. Yes, more recently others are putting out accurate maps, but it's been a long time coming.

As a fellow mapmaker, I can attest to the tedious work for long hours to get the information. Some of it is easy to obtain and download AND is frequently updated (cf. TTB's datasets), others require you to literally draw the boundaries because no one has access to the data. Or they don't know who does. Plus much of the data isn't free or is technically subject to copyright (even ones from a government agency). And don't get me started with the descriptions from Italy.

Anyway, I look forward to checking them out and downloading the lot for myself! The days of me using GEP are numbered due to support being dropped both by Mac OS in the future and Google themselves not putting out more updates at some point in the future as well. There are other ways obviously to do my versions, I just lose certain flexibility and creativity for free.

RE: New Maps!

The maps themselves look great and I think they will find a highly appreciative audience here. That being typed, a few observations:
1. I would hope the old GuildSomm maps would not disappear, even if only to be delimited to an archived section. Out-of-date maps can be enormously informative to trajectories and understanding historical trends, and every map prioritizes something at the expense of something else. To the degree GuildSomm (and GuildSomm subscribers) has already invested in the development of the previous maps, it doesn’t make sense to just make them disappear.
2. The new maps appear only to allow zooming in if you download them. This is another choice, and may best fit the overall needs for the GuildSomm membership, but I personally find that cumbersome, especially if I want to check a good map for an important detail quickly.
3. Please please please find a less haphazard way of presenting them. I think the hierarchical-geographical tree of the Compendium makes sense, but recreating this scrolling-and-uploading-as-you-scroll-but-you-can’t-search plopping them in to be a way to throw amazing content behind a screen of thorns. Right now this keeps everything that was unfortunate about the last way of presenting. And it’s entirely possible there is actually a much better way of sifting through these than I am aware of, if so say it loud and say it proud. I’m not unwilling to admit my ignorance and I’d love to be able to navigate this content with greater command.

Thanks for keeping the content coming!

RE: New Maps!

Love the SommGeo content!
