The first was the sheer bewildering pace of the thing: eight days, three Australian states, 11 wine regions, and God

RE: Study Strategies: Evaluating Wine Quality

I appreciate your comment that 'you must accept that the best tasters are able to put their personal preferences to one side and analyze the contents of their glasses dispassionately', which is what I always believed wine judges or critics do (or should do). However, having the opportunity to judge with various professionals, I find that many times someone will exclaim how much they like oak or big fruit and alcohol and award based on their personal preferences. While typicity does enter into the equation, I also hope that these folks are aware of what typical wines come from a region and the basics of what the vintage(s) delivered in the years being evaluated. I do try and judge using BLIC as a model and always keep an open eye on typicity and vintage characteristics. Thank you for the article and insight. Cheers!

RE: Study Strategies: Evaluating Wine Quality

Very good read, Natasha. The other element of "quality" is the argument of wine sales and consumer appreciation. There are many wines that sell like proverbial hot-cakes but could arguably be judged as out of balance or questionable in quality. At times, in order to sell wine and keep the lights on, a producer has to give their segment what they want. If you could make a perfect wine, is it still perfect if no one buys it? Just being a devil's advocate. Again, thank you for this great piece.

RE: Study Strategies: Evaluating Wine Quality

This is very true. More and more professionals are taking the opinion route versus objective assessments of quality. Just like an athlete one needs to train themselves on how to remove opinion so they may become a more clear and succinct communicator of wine
