Visit to Austria and Croatia this Summer

I'm headed to Eastern Europe this summer and would love any recommendations of wineries to visit in Austria (close to Vienna, Wauchau Region) and Croatia (coastal, near Dubrovnik). Thanks in advance.

  • Lucky you! I love the wines this man makes, so if I were going, I would try to visit here: http://www.donabaum.com/ Sighardt Donabaum in Wachau area. And then there's Alzinger, F.X. Pichler, Prager.... the list goes on!

Also, I would love to visit Mike Grgich's Winery in Dalmatia (Dubrovnik).
  • What a great trip. I am going to Croatia for my honey moon (as soon as work allows) please update this when you get back with your favorites.
  • Leslie, you should take a look at the feature I wrote here about Coastal Croatia www.guildsomm.com/.../the-wines-of-the-croatian-coast
I also have a guide to the whole of Dalmatia as well www.vinologue.com/.../

But in short, you'll probably need your own wheels to get around properly. Most of the tour companies I've encountered really only do set routes that won't be as interesting to a wine professional and the wine region around Dalmatia stretches quite far.
  • When I was there in 2010, I was on a trip with an importer, so we only visited his properties.  Mind you, I love those properties, so I'm not complaining at all.

If you're in the Kamptal area, there's a killer hotel right behind Steininger Winery and Museum. The Loisium

Find and drink interesting schnapps while you're in Austria.  Carrot was my favorite.  There's plenty of good liquor stores in Vienna.

  • In reply to Marissa Copeland:

You should make a point to visit the Alphart winery and eat at their heuriger. Great wines and great schnitzel!
  • I'm a fan of the Zlatan Otok wines as well as Bura, especially the Dingac Plavac Mali. I had the pleasure to meet these guys at a trade event recently and they are great, and awesome advocates for the wines of the region.
