'mock' exams in Austin, TX | MON, JAN 27th & WEDS, FEB 12th - 2020 | 9:45 AM - 3:00 PM

Dear All,

The ATX SOMMS community will be hosting two (2) ‘mock’ exams at the end of JAN and mid-FEB.  These events are not limited to the Austin sommelier community; thus, we are extending an invite to sommeliers from other cities in the greater Texas area. 

Please see the following information:

 dates:  MON, JAN 27th | WEDS, FEB 12th

 time:  9:45 AM – 3 PM

 location:  Hideaway Kitchen & Bar @ 4323 S I-35 Frontage Rd, Austin, TX – 78744

 hosts:  ATX SOMMS and Hideaway Kitchen & Bar

 cost:  a $5 - $10 donation per participant in order to ‘tip-out’ the Hideaway staff and Housemen

 # of seats per ‘mock’ exam:  capped @ twelve (12) | *note:  you may only register for one (1) ‘mock’ exam date

 why:  education – mentoring – 'esprit de corps' – sharing of knowledge – ‘best practices’ for exam performance

 what do I bring?:  all personal wine service gear + one (1) dump bottle each of bubbles and red wine

Given the amount of preparation, planning, and time, please observe the following ‘Points to Note’ and 'HOUSE RULES' listed below very carefully:

Points to Note

*in the scope of practical application, those who select to participate must have sat for and successfully completed the CMS – Americas Level I Introductory Sommelier Course & Exam with the intention of sitting for a higher level of certification pertaining to the CMS – Americas organization

*​by definition, a​ 'mock' exam is designed to be a tool for evaluation regarding one's skill-set in order for said individual to ​​receive prescriptive and honest feedback for the sole purpose of improvement as relates to the areas of deductive tasting, beverage theory, and service mechanics

*the deductive wines, beverage theory, and service practical scenarios, in addition to all other information/feedback provided, is not meant to represent, in any manner or reflection​, examination materials presented by CMS – Americas​ for testing purposes

 *these 'mock' exams are neither endorsed, nor recognized by CMS – Americas as being affiliated with their organization

‘HOUSE RULES’

 1).  Deadline to register for MON, JAN 27th is FRI, JAN 24th by 10:00 PM.  For WEDS, FEB 12th is MON, FEB 10th by 10:00 PM.  No requests to participate will be honored past the stated deadlines.  All have been given a reasonable time frame to commit.  As per the above, capacity is set at twelve (12) seats.  Again, you may only register for one (1) ‘mock’ exam date.

 2).  To register, you need to send your communication of intent to the following email address:

  *note:  provide your full name, place of work, and date – location of where you passed CMS – Americas​ Level I Course & Exam

 3).  Please, no phone calls or texts; thus rule #2!

 4).  As we are all adults and professionals, the option to 'no show' is not an option.  Take the personal responsibility to communicate, in a timely manner, via email to atxsomms@gmail.com, your need to withdraw.

 5).  It is expected that those who elect to attend will have dedicated the needed time for preparation and practice.  Do not make the mistake of using this valuable opportunity to 'stumble & fumble' your way through the process due to lack of attention to detail. 

Parameters

 *passing score will be set at 70% for each section of deductive tasting, beverage theory, and the service practical

 *deductive tasting will consist of four (4) wines analyzed using the CMS – Americas deductive tasting sheets

 *theory exam will consist of fifty (50) questions covering the ‘world of beverage’

 *service practical will cover tasks that are common to ‘best practices’ regarding service mechanics

 *all participants will be given their scores

9:45 AM - 10:00 AM - quick 'Meet & Greet' + 'Run of Show' for the day

10:00 AM - 10:45 AM - Deductive Tasting @ 25 mins. + Beverage Theory @ 20 mins.

10:15 AM - 11:30 AM - Grading Period

11:30 AM - 11:50 AM - Service Round #1

11:50 PM - 11:55 AM - reset room

12:00 PM - 12:20 PM - Service Round #2

12:20 PM - 12:25 PM - reset room

12:30 PM - 12:50 PM - Service Round #3

12:50 PM - 1:30 PM - Grading Period

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM - 'Round Table' with all participants

2:31 PM - hugs, ‘high fives’, pats on the back, and yes, all will assist in cleaning up + plus a huge thank you to Hideaway Kitchen & Bar

2:35 PM - gather in the Hideaway bar for cocktails & 'bites'
