Non-vintage vs multi-vintage usage on a wine list

Hello, 

Could anyone explain the difference of use of non-vintage vs multi-vintage? Fundementally they are quite similar as every NV is actually a MV. 

Would it be wiser to use NV for the blends we don't actually know the vintages and MV for the blends that we know from which vintages it is?

How would you write that on your wine lists?

  • I understand the desire to not use "non" with association to Champagne; Olivier Krug has remarked that Krug Grande Cuvée shouldn't be called 'non-vintage' because there's nothing 'non' about Krug. However, I personally think there's an easy solution for this problem...NV means "Non-Vintage" but what it should really say is "Non Vintage Dated" Champagne. There's nothing negative about that -- the wine is a blend of wines from multiple vintages/harvests, but it's not a vintage dated wine. Make that your wine list section header. Just my $.02.
