Volunteers for Forks & Corks Blind Wine Judging - Nov. 25 in Sarasota, FL

The Sarasota-Manatee Originals will hold the 8th annual blind wine judging event for the 2020 Forks & Corks Food and Wine Festival on Monday, November 25, and the group is seeking industry professionals to volunteer as judges.

The judging event awards Best in Show, Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and Bronze Medal designations to the wines that are showcased and sold at the Grand Tasting. These awards help sell wine at the Grand Tasting and get patrons of the event excited about what they will be sampling.

Date: Monday, November 25, 2019

Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm

Location: Michael’s On East Ballroom, 1212 S East Ave, Sarasota, FL 34239

Out-of-town judges will be offered complimentary accommodations for the evening on Monday, November 25.

Judging logistics:

  • 20 beverage professionals serve as wine judges for the day, broken into 5 groups of 4 judges.
  • Each judging group judges the same wine. Each judging group rates an average of 60 wines during the day.
  • The wines are judged using a 20-point scale and are judged on appearance, aroma, taste, finish, and overall balance.
  • The judging event is silent (no talking among the judges).
  • Judges are told what category the wine falls into but not brand/winery name.
  • The judges start with white wines, take a break for lunch, and move onto the red wines in the afternoon.
  • When all wines have been judged, the top 10 scoring reds and top 10 scoring whites are re-tasted and judged by all 20 judges.
  • The top scoring red and white wine earns the designation “Best in Show."
  • The other top 9 are the Gold Medal winners.
  • Best in Show and Gold Medalists are revealed that evening. The complete results, including Silver and Bronze designations, are released about a week after the event.
