This week: Anderson Valley AVA
Give us the lay of the land and name some top producers.
Anderson Valley AVA was established in 1983. It is a nested AVA within the boundaries of the larger Mendocino AVA in Mendocino County on the northern coast of California. It is one of California’s coolest and most marginal climates, with steep hills, and cool ocean air and fog coming in along the Navarro River. Champagne House Louis Roederer is based in Anderson Valley, founding Roederer Estate in 1981, making elegant sparkling wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Other producers making Pinot Noir from the Anderson Valley AVA include Copain, Drew, and Donum Estate.
Within Mendocino County, Anderson Valley produces great pinot noir and chardonnay + Alsatian grapes as well. Some great sparkling wines are made here tempered by the cool marine air and fog, making Anderson valley one of the coolest areas in California. Navarro River flows north to West through the coastal range to the Pacific Ocean.
Louis Roederer stablished a house in 1982.
Copain makes Pinot Noir.
Navarro Vineyards makes some fun Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir “Juice”
Anderson Valley is further north, actually in Mendocino. What you’re describing is Alexander Valley.
Thank you Sean. That's correct! I'm fixing now
The east/west orientation of the valley is an important contributor to the diurnal shift which allows the grapes to ripen but also cool down and go through acidic respiration. Clay, Gravelly, Sand, Loam dominate soils, with some cool Ribbon Chert and Serpentine. Roederer Estate, Drew Family Cellars and Goldeneye.
Tons and tons of fog.
They have their own strang language called Boontling near Boonville.
Many of the more sought after wines come from outsiders: either outside investment like Roederer’s swanky Domaine Anderson or Duckhorn’s Goldeneye, which both developed an Anderson Valley winery, or wineries from nearby counties making Anderson Valley AVA Wine elsewhere like Williams Selyem, Littorai, and Copain.
Beyond Pinot, Gewurtz and Riesling do well.
