I am taking the level one exam in a month and I have only been studying for about 5 weeks. If I study just the Study Guild PDF they give you when you sign up, is that enough to do really well or should I be studying beyond that?
You should be in good shape!
Thank you Ellen!
you still have time try going over wine bible especially France. Make sure to listen and take notes during the class for 2 days. You will be in a great shape
Thank you. I am only half way through the PDF. And I am feel like it will take me the rest of my time to get through the rest of the study guild. I should say its taking me so long to get though the guild for a few reasons 1) only so many hours in a week - everyone's ones problem I know, 2) I am taking notes on what I am readying 3) I am making flash cards on what I am reading and 4) I am creating PowerPoint 1 sheets on each area (it helps me visualize). Now realizing I may ONLY get though the study guild, I am worried that the info provided won't be enough and I should be studying beyond the given material. AHHHH I know you have all been there but the stress is real!!
Every question on the exam comes from the pdf you get when you sign up (they also give it to you bound). They also "review" the pdf for the first day and a half before the exam, so if you are studying the material provided, and pay attention to the review, you will be in great shape! Good luck!
Hey Tami, I think studying for the exam 5 weeks out, presumably 9 weeks by the time you take the class, will definitely put you in great shape. The class is fast paced, but they go over everything you'll need, plus much more. From what the masters said at our exam, they really try to overeducate you since there isn't a class for Certified Somm. I totally get that the stress is very real and will probably still be very real during the class. The fast paced nature, and little study time during the class, doesn't help calm the nerves. You are already prepared more than some. I think you'll be in a great place.
What is your level of wine knowledge before studying for this exam? Is this your entry into wine? Have you been in the industry for a bit prior?
Thanks!! Knowing that calms my nerves.
That's what I have been doing. I'll be in Reno, NV for Level 1 next month with a group from Amador County, CA.
Thanks Jared for the info.
My own real knowledge of wine prior to this was the wine I drank but I have worked in the industry for quite some time. (Mostly nightclubs). My Champagne and spirits knowledge is much stronger.
That's where I will be as well. June 18-20th?
I found that following the study guide, preparing as if I was going in for level two, and paying close attention during the classroom days made for an easy multiple choice exam and passing level one. Keep studying theory and you should do fantastically.
I will be at this course as well! Same boat as you Tami, hope all this studying of the packet will be enough.
